I ...I confess to having enjoyed Rendezvous on Rama. I read it mistakenly thinking it was on the Pringle list. No matter how bad Clarke's experience with Kubrick might have been, he seems to have picked up the knack for straightforward storytelling. But what I liked with the at first glance anti-climactic conclusion. Here this asteroid-sized space ship drifts into our solar system. We send out an exploratory team, the entire world -- or council of planets -- speculate on what the newcomers might offer or demand, the settlers on Mercury threaten to blow it up. But it turns out the ship is merely here to defrost after its journey through space, do some clean up and repair work, then use our sun as an energy source to move on. Whoever commands the ship could care less about us, if they even know we exist. Recently I read that it was stalled in post production years ago because studios didn't like the Satan angle. It's now destined to never be filmed.

I have not read the City and the Stars, but have an experience with a Clarke novel being poorly written and not bothering with another one. Rendezvous with Rama did it for me. Just a bunch of descriptions with no human drama and no conclusion. I wonder if he had a good editor that he lost or lost touch with periodically. Did all of his novels get published by the same house?Emil Limehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04903279608873902591noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4698055999417728005.post-35631178542653595812010-07-17T09:15:08.500-05:002010-07-17T09:15:08.500-05:00Yep, a Presbyterian from Florida will ruin you eve...Yep, a Presbyterian from Florida will ruin you every time...Sounderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05757482436229985280noreply@blogger.com
